THE SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD

Word of God Sunday is meant to be a means to help us “reawaken an awareness of the importance of Sacred Scripture for our lives as believers, beginning with its resonance in the liturgy which places us in living and permanent dialogue with God.” One of the primary ways in which the faithful honour God’s Word in the liturgy is by faithfully listening to the proclamation of the readings and the homily, and by discerning the various ways in which God’s Word applies to our lives. When acknowledging how hard it can be to stay focussed on Scripture, he said: “This is a risk for all of us: overwhelmed by a barrage of words, we let the word of God glide by us: we hear it, yet we fail to listen to it; we listen to it, yet we don’t keep it; we keep it, yet we don’t let it provoke us to change”. And St Jerome once said, ‘Ignorance of the Scripture is ignorance of Christ.’
